EU GOVSATCOM Enters Operational Phase, Strengthening Europe’s Secure Satellite Communications
EU GOVSATCOM — the European Governmental Satellite Communications initiative — has officially entered its operational phase. This marks a major milestone for Europe’s secure, resilient and sovereign satellite communications.
The announcement was made by EU Commissioner for Defence and Space Andrius Kubilius during his Opening Address at the 18th European Space Conference in Brussels. In his remarks, he underlined the strategic importance of EU GOVSATCOM for Europe’s security, autonomy and institutional cooperation.
As a result, EU GOVSATCOM is now operational and ready to serve Member States. It provides access to secure, encrypted and resilient satellite connectivity for government and defence use. At the same time, the initiative strengthens Europe’s ability to safeguard critical communications under all circumstances.
At Hellas Sat, we are proud that Greece is among the five EU countries contributing satellite connectivity to this landmark European capability. Through this contribution, Hellas Sat leverages its strategic satellite fleet at the 39° East orbital position to support the mission of EU GOVSATCOM.
In practical terms, EU GOVSATCOM delivers secure and encrypted satellite communications that are built and operated in Europe. Moreover, it ensures access for all 27 EU Member States. It also serves as a foundational building block for future EU secure space services and planned expansions.
In addition, the initiative strengthens cooperation across government, defence, security and emergency response domains. This cooperation is essential for Europe’s long-term resilience in space-based communications.
Overall, this important step highlights Europe’s collective progress towards greater strategic autonomy. It also reinforces collaboration between EU institutions, Member States and industry partners.
Finally, congratulations go to the European Commission, EU institutions, Member States and industry partners. This achievement represents a historic step forward for Europe’s secure connectivity.
