Carrier activation procedure on Hellas Sat space segment

Make all necessary station’s tests to ensure proper operation of the uplink and downlink chains. Use an RF spectrum analyzer at the monitoring point of the HPA, to observe its transmit spectrum (look for spurious carriers, IM products or thermal noise above the allowed level).
Make an accurate alignment of the antenna and feed polarization. To pick the antenna direction, use the satellite’s telemetry beacon (circular polarization): 11,451.500MHz.

Monitor with a spectrum analyzer the allocated frequency band on the transponder to ensure the band is free from any spurious or interference.
Monitor on the MONICS application the allocated frequency band on the transponder to ensure the band is free from any activated carriers or interference.

Contact Hellas SAT NOC to obtain authorization to begin testing over the satellite. Confirm with the user, the carrier’s parameters (Carrier ID, Activation time, Center Frequency, Polarization, Bandwidth and EIRP) as per Hellas SAT Activation data.

Under the guidance of Hellas SAT NOC transmit an un-modulated carrier on the assigned frequency at 20dB bellow the allocated transmit level. Measure the carrier’s center frequency and polarization
3 Modulate the carrier. Adjust U/L EIRP under the guidance of Hellas SAT NOC to achieve the nominal D/L EIRP and C/N.  Measure the carrier’s bandwidth and D/L EIRP, C/N and Eb/No.

 If requested by Hellas SAT NOC, increase / decrease U/L EIRP by a few dB and/or turn-off the carrier momentarily.
User may be requested to provide a spectrum analyzer plot of the U/L HPA’s output.
 Monitor the full transponder band to ensure transponder noise level has not been changed and /or spurious carriers observed.
5 The user can measure the received C/N or Eb/No performance to verify the designed values. Receive Margin tests are highly recommended for DVB and SCPS digital carriers. 
 Assist the user with EIRP, C/N measurements for various receive levels.
6 Additional testing is optional and may be conducted by the user to ensure the desired performance is achieved.
